Cannes breathes: The Croisette goes green

Living on the Côte d'Azur

La Croisette, the emblematic jewel of the Côte d'Azur, is no longer content to be a prestigious tourist destination: it is now positioning itself as a model sustainable city, where quality of life, economic innovation and environmental protection go hand in hand. For residents and future residents, this means a healthier living environment, renovated and accessible public spaces, and cleaner, quieter transport, while preserving the landscapes and natural resources for which the city is renowned.

With this in mind, in 2025 the town launched the Cannes Lérins H2 program, which includes the construction of a decarbonated hydrogen production station. This innovative facility will be able to generate up to 800 KG of hydrogen per day, helping to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 3,200 tonnes each year, compared with the use of fossil fuels. Eventually, 41 buses in the Palm Bus network will be powered by this clean energy, including 14 as early as 2026, enabling local residents to enjoy more environmentally-friendly, comfortable and quieter travel.

Over and above its ecological impact, this project represents a total investment of 50 million euros. It is also helping to create local jobs, train specialized technicians and develop skills in the clean energy sector. These initiatives not only enhance Cannes' attractiveness, but also support the region's economic and social dynamism, by combining innovation, sustainable mobility and local opportunities.

At the same time, the town is embarking on another flagship ecological transition project: the installation of a thalassothermal network designed to harness the heat energy of the sea to heat and cool buildings on the Croisette. From 2026 onwards, this underground power plant will supply the Palais des Festivals, several prestigious hotels, residential accommodation and various public facilities, thanks to a network of over 10 km, providing 74% renewable energy. Over its lifetime, this system will prevent the emission of more than 125,000 tonnes of CO2.

For citizens planning to make a sustainable and responsible acquisition, these projects motivated by the ecological transition reinforce the commune's appeal: living in Cannes now means enjoying an improved quality of life, in a clean and innovative environment, while offering interesting investment prospects in an attractive real estate market.

By combining environmental protection, resident comfort and ecological dynamism, Cannes shows that it is possible to reconcile prestige, modernity and sustainability, making the Croisette and its surrounding area a true Mediterranean model for the city of tomorrow.

With these initiatives, Cannes is not only responding to current environmental challenges: the city is also preparing for the future of present and future generations by making sustainability a real driver of innovation and local development.
